TSS Rovers has a long rivalry with Victoria Highlanders dating back to our inaugural season in the PDL and later USL2.  Rovers and Highlanders were the last two combatants for the Juan de Fuca Plate in the USL.  In 2017, Highlanders bested us for that trophy, but we came back and won it in 2018 and 2019.  Technically, the oldest team in League 1 BC, the Highlanders began play in 2009 and have had many notable men’s players come through their side, including former Whitecaps Brett Levis, Caleb Clark, and current Pacific FC captain Josh Heard.

Highlanders have fielded women’s teams on and off for many years starting in 2001, including participation in the USL W League in 2011 and 2012. At the time,  the USL W League was the highest level of women’s professional soccer in North America.

This season the Highlanders will see both of their squads anchored around players from the University of Northern BC and the University of Victoria varsity teams.

Highlander legend, Callum Montgomery, who faced us in 2017 and 2018, continues his pro career, signing with Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League.  Since the pandemic, he has played with several USL sides on loan from MLS teams FC Dallas and Minnesota United.  Callum also has 2 caps for Canada’s U23 men’s team. We wish him all the best as he continues to chart his pro career.

Last week Highlanders began their season on the road against Whitecaps FC.  The Women’s side were downed 2-0 by the league champions, and the men held the Whitecaps to a 1-1 draw, levelling the game in the 88th minute. All four teams will be hungry for a win on Saturday, as both our clubs sit at the bottom of the Juan de Fuca Plate standings.

Last week’s recap.

Women’s team

It was a tough start for us last week against Nautsa’mawt, dropping a 2-0 result to the newcomers.  The score flattered the opposition somewhat, and despite good performances from the likes of Aislin Streicek, Nikki Virk and Shayla Chorney, we were unable to convert our chances.

Men’s team

In a rematch of our 2022 Final, our men’s team held Nautsa’mawt FC to a 0-0 draw. It was Darren Russcher’s first match in charge of the men’s team. While missing six of his starters, who were busy winning the BC Provincial Championships with BB5 United, he put together a strong squad that held last year’s league champions to the goalless draw. A late chance by Keiji Adenyi almost secured 3 points for us, but we’ll be happy with the draw and a clean sheet for Connor Adams and a novel centre-back pairing from Shaya Zarjampour and Tyler Dhillon on debut.
