League Play Begins!

Match week 1: April 29, 2023

It’s match week 1, and our League 1 season is about to get underway.  This week’s opponent:

Nautsa’mawt FC

Saturday, April 29 @ Swangard Stadium
TSS Rovers (0-0-0) v Nautsa’mawt FC (0-0-0) @ Swangard in Burnaby
Women at 1:30pm
Men at 4:00pm

Make sure to grab your season pass to secure your place at Swangard. Only $80 for all 14 matches. If you can’t make all the dates, the club will gladly give your spare tickets to kids that deserve a chance to see a live match themselves. Support the club by getting a pass this year.

This week’s opponent is Nautsa’mawt FC, owned by Hope and Health, an organization that engages, educates and supports Indigenous children through sport.  Nautsa’maut means “One Heart One Mind” in Hulq’u’mi’num and is formerly Varsity FC. They are Canada’s first-ever Indigenous-owned semi-professional soccer club.  Nauta’mawt FC currently holds the Juan de Fuca Plate, awarded by supporters to the club with the best combined record in both the men’s and women’s divisions of League1BC.

Nautsa’mawt FC’s teams feature several players we know well. Both their men’s and women’s teams will retain the core of the players that played for Varsity FC last year, making them one of the stronger teams in the leagues right out of the gate. The women’s team will feature former TSS Rovers Mia Pante (2023) and Jenna Baxter (2018)  Scoring threat Vanessa Tome returns to the side, and Canada U-20 international Holly Ward also suits up again for Nautsa’mawt.

On the men’s side, many of the players who appeared in the League Cup Final are returning to the team, no doubt hungry to avenge last year’s penalty kicks loss.  Experienced former professionals like Defenders Joe Zupo and Noah Hrdlicka are joined from the core of the 2022 Canada West-winning UBC Thunderbirds squad.   This important match-up will have major implications for the end of the season standings. Be sure to be there to see our rivalry renewed.

A Magical Night

We made history at Swangard on April 19.  If you were there, you witnessed history as we became the first League 1 team to knock out a professional team in the Canadian Championships.  Relive the night here with AFTN’s Voyageurs Cup photo album:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/aftncanada/albums/72177720307653271

It was a special occasion.  Here is a selection of some of the best media from the night:

It was a stunning 3-1 victory over Valour FC in the Canadian Championship on April 19.  Thanks to the nearly 2000 of you who came out to witness this historical event. We now play Pacific FC in the quarter-final, May 10 at 7pm over at Starlight Stadium in Langford.

Donated Tickets – Well Done Everyone!

Well over 100 youth and caregivers made it out to the Valour match through kind donations to the Rovers Community Giving Fund. Nice job everyone. We will keep supporting youth to be inspired through the beautiful game and by working with local charities to assist with tickets to every home match. If you want to make a charitable donation to enable a young person and their caregiver to attend, you can do so here:

Every donation is matched by the Catherine and Diana Lunde Family Fund, meaning that each donated ticket turns into two tickets.

News shorts

The next two weeks are all about our Vancouver Island rivals.  On May 6, we host Highlanders FC at Swangard, and on May 10, our men’s team travels to Langford for the Canadian Championship quarter-final against Pacific FC. We are always looking for volunteers for match days. If you are interested, contact colin@tss.ca or catch up with anyone in a team kit on Saturday.

Ticket Info

Rovers brass has worked with Pacific FC management to create an away section for all Rovers supporters going to the match. In a wonderful gesture, Pacific FC has also agreed to discount regular tickets from $26 to $21 AND give back $5 per ticket to Rovers Football Club. Every ticket you buy through the link goes to supporting local football and a strong soccer pyramid. Thanks Pacific FC!
