This week’s opponent(S)
Match week 9: Wednesday, June 21 & 24

Well, THAT was satisfying! Four matches over the last two weeks in the Ironworker’s Derby against Altitude and we came away with 10 points overall.  Our women’s team held on for a 3-2 victory while the men’s team, after a slow start, put 5 past Altitude for a 5-1 win in the bright sunshine of North Vancouver.

The matches come fast now and the business end of the season is upon us. We have two games this week, including our last home game of the season on Wednesday against the Whitecaps and a crucial away match in Langley against Unity at the weekend.  Read on for details!

Whitecaps FC

Wednesday, June 21

  • TSS Rovers Women (3-3-2, 5th) v Whitecaps FC (6-2-0, 3rd ) @ Swangard, 6:00pm
  • TSS Rovers Men (5-2-1, 2nd) Whitecaps FC (3-1-4, 4th ) @Swangard, 8:30pm

Location: Swangard Stadium
TV: Streamed on the League 1 BC YouTube channel
Tickets: $20/$15/$12

Swangard will be undergoing repairs during July, so our last home game of the season is set to take place on Wednesday. We face the Whitecaps in two crucial games as the women’s team clamours for the fourth and final playoff spot, and our men’s team continues to push for the coveted top spot in the league.

The Whitecaps women’s last match was June 14 and was a 6-1 dismantling of Unity, making our 2-1 win against them all the more impressive.  However, they have their players returning from U20 National duty and although it is looking increasingly hard to catch Nautsa’mawt for the top spot, the defending women’s division champions are doing their best. They are five points of the top spot with one game in hand.

For the men, we dropped a heartbreaker to the ‘Caps in May, losing 1-0 away. The Whitecaps picked up a 1-0 against Unity, putting them three points off of us for second place. A win in this match is essential if we are to open up some space at the top of the table.

Unity FC

Saturday, June 24

  • Unity FC Women (6-2-2, 2nd) v TSS Rovers Women (3-3-2, 5th) @ Chase Office Field, 1:00pm
  • Unity FC Men (0-4-2, 8th) v TSS Rovers Men (4-2-1, 3rd)  @ Kinsman Field 3:30pm

Location: Chase Office Field, Langley
TV: None.
Tickets: At the gate

Our previous matches against Unity in May were mirror images of each other. While the women lost 0-4, our men’s team beat them 4-0 in what would prove to be a crucial victory for our championship aspirations against a Unity team that has been at our near the top of the table all season long. In the women’s division Unity sit above us in a group of three teams who have almost locked up three of the four playoff spots.  Despite dropping points to the Caps on June 14, they remain nine points above us. We need a result to stay in the hunt for fourth.

Last Week

Women’s Team
Altitude 2 Rovers 3

Last year in this fixture, we gave up a late goal to lose this match in heartbreaking fashion but our gaffer Chelsey Hanneson was not going to have a repeat of that.  Our team was on fire, led by the energy of Delana Friesen, who could not be stopped, creating havoc amongst the Altitude backline and netting a brace. She wasted no time slotting home her first at 4’ and then following up at 57’.  But despite Altitude clawing two back, Sophia Feremo scored her first as a Rover to secure the win at 68’ and three extremely satisfying points.

Congratulations to Alyssa Zalac, marking her Rovers debut in net with a win.

Men’s Team
Altitude 1 Rovers 5

Our domination of Altitude was rendered complete in the second match on the day. Coming off of a 4-0 victory at Swangard the previous week, our men’s team dropped an early goal and went into the half tied 1-1 after Erik Edwardson scored a penalty at 34’, looking for some chemistry to get them going.  Whatever happened in the dressing room transformed the side thought, and Rovers football was back on full display for the second half. We made our breakthrough with a stunning Kyle Jones goal in the top corner at 65’, and then Ivan Meija got his weekly goal at 74’.  But we weren’t settling for that. Kian Proctor, a Rovers homegrown talent, subbed on at 79’ and scored an outstanding brace with goals at 83’ and 90’.  A good showing for our boys, who started slow and found a way to win.
